the cold snap continues to take its toll with Fakenham and Wincanton now both abandoned. There is also an inspection planned for Musselburgh's Cheltenham Trials weekend card, with possibilities of the meeting going ahead already looking bleak. It looks like Catterick and Chepstow may also be cancelled for Friday so fingers crossed that Sandown and Wetherby go ahead on Saturday, or we could end up with a blank week for us which hasn't happened for many years.
Yesterday we published the weekly review here detailing last week's performance so I won't repeat it here.
The team at Cleeve
3.30 Wincanton 2m4f (2m4f35y) Frome Scoffolding Handicap Chase (For The Dick Hunt Trophy) (Class 2) (5yo+ 0-145)
Cleeve Top 3 Rated:
1) Bigmartre – 72
2) Magic Saint – 64
2) Valdez – 64
Valdez is now twelve years old and despite his age could still be dangerous in what looks to be a moderate Class 2. He has not really shown anything to suggest he is ready to win, and the stable remains fairly chilly.
Bigmartre is the best horse in the race, but it is of major concern that he finished lame last time out and was pulled up on his previous start. Bigmartre has also been beaten a long way on his three completed starts this season plus the stable is not in particularly good form.
Magic Saint almost became the selection here by default as he has more scope to improve than most in the field. He has run well enough without winning in his first two starts in the UK following his move to Paul Nicholls from France. This looks a much easier race than his first two and if replicating his French form, he should win this. This is the stable’s local course and it would be no surprise to see the horse improve to win here.
