Another placed selection today with Petticoat Tails. As I said yesterday we just can't seem to get in the winner's enclosure at the moment, but I am happy that we clawed back a small profit today which is better than a loser. Again the winner of the race returned 20/1! She ran OK but before 2 out she was being pushed along, but she stayed on well to get the place.
We have analysed the only two Class 2 races up at Ayr in sunny Scotland and come up with 2 selections at decent each way prices... let's hope we can bag that elusive winner today.
The team at Cleeve
3.45 Ayr 2m4½f (2m4f110y) Hillhouse Quarry Handicap Chase (Listed Race) (Class 1) (5yo+)
Cleeve Top 3 Rated:
1) Cracking Find – 103
2) Guitar Pete – 101
3) Ballyhill – 92
3) Just Cameron – 92
Ballyhill has won at Grade 3 level but needs to win off a career-high mark here and although he will cope with the going, his best win was on heavy.
Guitar Pete was a creditable sixth in the Brown Advisory at the Festival in a higher class race. He would also have to run to a career best to win off this mark and is more likely to place than win.
Just Cameron comes from a hot stable but at the age of eleven is probably going to finish behind a few pairs of younger legs. He jumps well so could run into a place if he is at his best.
Cracking Find is a promising novice who should run well and go close. It is slightly ironic given my reasons for going against Ballyhill and Guitar Pete… he has to win off a career-high mark, over a longer trip than he has previously and in a higher class than he has to date, but he jumps well and despite a 5 pounds penalty I think he can win this due to his very progressive profile.
4.45 Ayr 3m½f (3m70y) coral.co.uk Seafield Trophy Mares' Handicap Hurdle (Class 2) (4yo+)
Cleeve Top 4 Rated:
1) Tara View – 136
2) Naranja – 129
3) Carnspindle – 124
4) Bon Chic – 122
4) Hitherjacques Lady – 122
Both the top two in the betting; Lamanver Odyssey and Hitherjacques Lady have a lot of weight and may struggle to win this but should challenge for a place.
Carnspindle struggled last time off her new mark and it is hard to see her winning here. She hurdles well and could get into the mix if she can manage to keep close to the pace.
Bon Chic is inconsistent, and it is hard to see her going close here, her price probably reflects her chances.
Naranja won twice earlier in the season but has been struggling off her new mark and I would be surprised if she could win at this level off her current mark.
We backed Tara View a few weeks ago but she was a non-runner when I thought she was on a decent mark. There are two slight negatives, the stable’s poor form and the weight she has to carry, but I am still confident she will run a big race. She was third over the trip and has two pounds less, plus she was third in a Grade 2 so we know she has the class. Tara View has enormous potential and her 50% strike rate over hurdles is impressive.
