Highlight of the week
Golden Wand from Roger Varian's looked like a filly on the improve when she convincingly took York's listed Galtres Stakes. On the face of it, a disappointing run in the Oaks probably came too soon but this daughter of Golden Horn now looks ready to step up again to group class.
Low point of the week
I was very disappointed with the run of Monsieur Lambrays in the Skybet Handicap. Well fancied in the market he was a bit sluggish away and disputed last for a mile and a half until they turned for home, where he was almost 20 lengths behind the leaders.
I didn't think it was Jack Mitchell's finest hour as he didn't seem to try and change anything despite it being clear how hard it was to make up ground. When he finally asked for an effort he found all the gaps closing in front of him and put his whip down with two furlongs to run.
It was undoubtedly a disappointing week for us all round and we handed back all of our profit for the month and a bit more.
The changeable weather didn't help, especially on Saturday when the Met didn't forecast any rain until after racing. It also turned out that you needed to be on the pace as it was virtually impossible for hold up horses to make up ground.
No excuses though, we have to suck it up and move on...
