Highlight of the week

It was great to see Mabs Cross picking up where she left off last season and it could be a stellar season for her... and a special thanks to Sergeie Prokofiev for making the market for us!

Low point of the week

The weather on 2,000 Guineas day was the worst I have ever experienced in racing. It made Cheltenham seem like Barbados!

Weekly Overview

A very satisfactory start to the season with a +6.5 profit in the bag and a very creditable 40% win & place strike rate. Our first selection Power of Darkness pulled very strongly for the first 3 furlongs and had nothing left in the locker when asked by Hayley Turner. It was a fairly similar story for Klassique but fortunately, she never got near our qualifying price of 2/1 so didn't qualify as a selection.

Mabs Cross looked an absolute ew snip in the Palace House, it is always tough for 3-y-o's taking on their elders at this time of year and the significant rain that fell in the days before the meeting was in her favour and against the hot favourite. Even though she had the Group One penalty to carry I thought she was cosy enough... she travelled well off a strong pace and quickened under hands and heels and Paul Mulrennan never had to get too serious with her.

On Sunday we kicked off with a winner as a strong ride by SDS who finally got Baghdad up in the final furlong when it looked as though Frankie may have nicked it on Corelli (who is an absolute giant of a horse!) off a slow pace.

Gifted Master was never at the races and after being prominent early James Doyle seemed quite content to let him drift back through the field and today was obviously not the day... we'll be keeping a close eye on him.

In stark contrast to Corelli Skitter Scatter is tiny! After watching her finish second last after breaking well and holding a good position for the first half of the race, I am thinking she may not have progressed as much as normal from two to three and we may have seen the best of her.

It looks like it could be a busy week for us with Chester's May meeting kicking off on Wednesday so keep an eye on those inboxes and fingers crossed for more of the same.

Best wishes,
The team at Cleeve
