Highlight of the week....
Elixir de Nutz made it 3 out of 4 when he took the Grade One Tolworth Hurdle with a gutsy front running display...
Low point of the week
The dearth of decent sized fields for races with good prize money on offer... it is cutting into our betting opportunities and is not a good advert for the sport.
A great first week of the year for members and we begin the year building on a decent performance in December. We hit the payout with 3 of our 7 selections for a 43% win & place strike rate which is very good going indeed.
Beware the Bear was heavily punted from an overnight 9/1 into 7/2 and was given a really enterprising ride by Jerry McGrath who made all but really forced the issue going out on the 2nd circuit and apart from reaching for the 4th last never really looked in danger... unfortunately a 20p rule 4 deduction reduced profits. The day saw further profits from Theeaglehaslanded who placed at 12/1. The following week saw Elixir de Nutz take the Tolworth with a really gutsy display to throw down a challenge for the Supreme for which he gets a 14/1 quote. This race last year threw up the first two home in the Supreme with Kalashnikov and Summerville Boy. Nicky Henderson's Rathill was a bitter disappointment especially as he was very heavily punted just before the off, but with Grand Sancy and Southfield Stone hunting up the winner, the form looks decent enough.
The Unibet Mares hurdle won in a hack canter at odds of 1/8 by Laurina clearly emphasised the problems we are currently getting with small, uncompetitive fields. Prize money of almost £17k and two runners makes for unedifying watching and non-racing fans flicking over could be forgiven for thinking 'this is not even a sport'. Sure horses can't be risked on unsafe ground but it was genuinely soft and the BHA has to do something about this.
