Highlight of the week

Our only placed horse Robin Des Foret looked all over the winner by the second last but when asked to pick up between the last two fences he took an age to get going, but he then finished like a train and was catching the front two all the way to the line.

Low point of the week

Destrier looked to have been found a really good opportunity and was heavily backed on the day, but he was ultimately very disappointing and there may well have been something amiss... it seems to be quite hard to get Paul Nicholls runners right at the moment.

Weekly Overview

A relatively quiet week with just the 5 tips. A large percentage of Class 2+ races that qualify for us are getting very small fields at the moment with value hard to come by. This has limited our opportunities in the short-term but with Christmas and New Year cards coming up and then all roads leading to Cheltenham we should be a lot busier over the coming weeks.

Of the 5 selections, we only managed the one place but to try and put things into perspective if that had been a winner we would be in front for the month.

Service Update
We have had a few emails from members who have been a little confused over some of our recent selections. I would like to take this opportunity to try and clarify how we are expanding the service to add extra value to members.

We have expanded the tipping team recently and have introduced 2 new services with separate P&L's from the main member service... Antepost and Eyecatchers. are still in their early days so we are still tweaking them a bit as results dictate. As with all race tipping, there is an element of subjectivity and personal opinion, therefore we have occasionally ended up with the odd race having selections from different members of the Cleeve Tipping Team. We aim to iron these conflicts out over the coming weeks and apologise for any confusion caused.

Below is our rationale behind each of the services...

Cleeve Member selections
These are the selections from our long-standing Head Tipster; Andrew, who has been successfully making these since the very inception of the Cleeve service. Selections are made in a very methodical and analytical way. We only focus on Class 2 and above races for these selections. First of all, we run our custom in-house rating system which we've fine-tuned over the years and it takes into account 12 different form factors and shortlists every horse in every qualifying race, these ratings are then passed on to the Tipping Team for further analysis and a selection made or not. A race can take up to 4 hours to analyse properly so a great deal of work goes into producing our selections, especially on a busy Saturday when they're can be 15 races to go through.
Our methodology is battle-hardened and proven to be consistently profitable over the long term. We have never had a losing season in the past 9 years, although admittedly we are going through a very poor run of results at the moment.

Antepost selections
The thinking behind this new service is that we look for horses in the early betting markets who have only the one entry for a race on a Saturday, we believe are overpriced and the race could cut up, so we can get better odds and place terms i.e we put up a selection on Wednesday at 14/1 and 4 places but come post time there are 8 runners, it's now best priced 6/1 and there are only 3 places.

Getting that kind of value gives us an almost certain chance of making a decent profit over time.

Eyecatchers
These are horses we have determined were either unlucky in running, running at the wrong distance or having solid reasons to show serious improvement. We track these horses and take a view on putting them up on their next run as Eyecatcher selections depending on the shape of the race and them getting ideal conditions.

We follow them for the next 3 runs then either cut from the list or carry on tracking.  We look for value with Eyecatchers and will often put them out with price caveats if we feel the prevailing early price is too short.

Some early teething problems
With the 3 different services we have different methodologies that can overlap so for the moment we are going to run the P&L for each service independently and members can take a view on whether they want to back them or not. The main member's service will be what we always judge ourselves on... we have introduced these new services in order to try and add value for our members.

Summary
We know we need to make some tweaks on how this will best work going forward, but we feel that it's worth doing so our members get better value from their Cleeve membership... we welcome and appreciate any comments you may have.
